A jury today convicted a Cape Cod doctor of illegally prescribing OxyContin and other addictive drugs.

Dr. Michael R. Brown, 51, had no reaction as the Barnstable County Superior Court jury delivered the verdict this morning. He was immediately taken into custody pending his sentencing, scheduled for 3 p.m. today.

Dr. Brown was first exposed by Fox Undercover's Mike Beaudet two years ago. Fox Undercover reported that Dr. Brown was prescribing one-third of all the OxyContin prescribed in Massachusetts. Some of his patients were junkies, dealers, or both.

Then in April 2006 Dr. Brown was indicted on charges he illegally prescribed OxyContin and other drugs to seven patients. Blood tests showed some of those patients had illegal drugs in their system but not the drugs prescribed by Dr. Brown. That led prosecutors to suggest that Dr. Brown's patients were selling the drugs they obtained with his prescriptions.

In addition to charges of illegally prescribing drugs, the state Attorney General's office accused Brown of multiple counts of Medicaid fraud and larceny. The jury found him guilty on all counts.

Dr. Brown's license to practice medicine was temporarily suspended in August 2005.
